F & P Benchmark Assessment

Assessment that leads to effective teaching
As mentioned in our Literacy section, our school board continues to work with
the highly-regarded Fountas and Pinnell resources. This includes “The
Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System.”
The use of the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System allows our
teachers to provide reliable assessment of reading and writing that places all
students accurately at their level, determines their independent and
instructional reading levels, and links assessment to appropriate teaching with
the Continuum of Literacy Learning.
Specific features of the Benchmark Assessment System enable our teachers to:

Determine their students' independent and instructional reading levels

Group students for reading instruction

Select texts that will be productive for a student's instruction

Assess the outcomes of teaching

Determine a new student's instructional and independent reading level

Identify students who need intervention and extra help

Monitor and report student progress across a school year and across year levels
